Press For Learning is the website for the Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding (BFSU) science curriculum for grades K through 8. Created by Bernard J. Nebel, Ph.D., BFSU provides hands-on, mind-son lesson plans to guide teachers in helping kids reach conclusions through their own observations, logical thinking, and reasoning. Meet Bernard J. Nebel, Ph.D.
Dr. Nebel crafted Press For Learning’s curriculum, Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding, to help teachers and parents understand what to teach, when to teach it, and where to start. Dr. Nebel spent most of his career teaching, particularly at Catonsville Community College in Catonsville, Maryland. When he noticed the absence of a course on environmental science, he developed and wrote one of the early environment science texts (Environment Science, Prentice Hall, 1981 and subsequent editions).
Dr. Nebel was inspired to create a curriculum for grades K-8 when he noticed a need for formative background knowledge and understanding demonstrated by his entry-level college students. Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding is his contribution toward improving environmental science educational practices and is a work in progress, adapting to needs and teaching methods as they evolve.
Use This Curriculum To Introduce Children to Environmental Science
Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding is a complete K-8 curriculum featuring over 100 detailed lesson plans to address and integrate all four major areas of science. This curriculum teaches science in a way that:
- Builds a framework of scientific understanding
- Makes logical thinking, questioning, and observing connections an integral part of every lesson
- Compares to the “Guiding Principles,” “Dimensions,” and “Core Ideas” of the NGSS curriculum
