How Did the Super Bowl Rank Across Social Media?
It’s official; the Patriots have won the Super Bowl, snagging the victory in overtime. If you don’t watch sports at all, chances are, you already know this because of social media. Going on Facebook within the last 24 hours has probably given you the rundown of the halftime show, the results of the game, and the commercials. In the last few years, the Super Bowl has caused a surge of hashtags and retweets across the world of sharing websites. How did it the Super Bowl rank this year?
A Historic Game
Unlike the fifty years before it, Super Bowl 51 was the first to go into overtime. And while it appeared that the Falcons were going to steal the game, the Patriots made an astounding comeback, meaning Tom Brady scored his fifth championship. The fire of this success has been stoked by social media; this nation recently entered a new political era, and that only seemed to fan the flames. Overall, Brady’s comeback was the most popular Twitter topic, among the 27.6 million tweets using the hashtag #SB51.
Race to Sell
It’s no secret that the Super Bowl ads are held to an incredibly high standard. These ads are seen by an incredible amount of people, which means they must be perfect, catchy, and entertaining. Overall, Pepsi won the advertising game, as they were the hosts of the halftime show. T-Mobile used Justin Bieber as a way to snag second place. It’s interesting to note that their competitor, Verizon, did not even rank in the top ten most mentioned brands on Twitter. And the influence of social media is astounding; many took to tweeting the hashtag #boycottbudwiser (typo included) because of political differences. This real world effect shows just how much social media can–literally–change the game.
