Pinterest Not Posting? Here’s Why You’re Having Trouble
You may have noticed that some of your most commonly used websites aren’t functioning the way they usually do. Maintenance messages, error pages, and inability to login to certain sites is plaguing the internet. Some of these sites, like Pinterest, are still recovering from the breakdown. But what has caused this past buggy weekend? You’d be surprised to know the original culprit: Amazon.com. Read on to find out more.
What Happened?
Last tuesday, for four hours, Amazon’s popular cloud service went down from a code error. It seems like a simple mishap. However, this storage service, S3, backs up quite a lot of popular sites. Amazon Web Services is responsible for many, many sites you probably use every single day. Netflix, Pinterest, Buzzfeed, Spotify…these are among the tens of thousands of websites that were experiencing downtime. As it turns out, this shortage were either caused by a simple coding error, or a human making a typo. For reference, AWS serves almost 150,000 companies. This downtime cost each one precious time and money while not being able to serve their respective customers.
How Does it Affect You?
If you use any of the sites that went down, you probably encountered inconvenience on varying degrees. The inability to aggregate to Pinterest could have been detrimental to many businesses, depending on their model. And, bigger websites such as Netflix or Buzzfeed, lost a lot of funds from the outage. This monetary loss could mean big problems for Amazon’s credibility. Considering they control so much of the internet’s popular data, could they suffer a customer dropout? It’s possible, considering such a simple error caused such a major blackout. Hopefully, AWS will get back on track, and we’ll see their cloud storage service come back stronger than ever before.
