And those calls are typically automated voice or text calls to provide PINs for account setup. So if you have received a live, unrequested Google telemarketing call, there is a 99.99% chance that call was a scam.
How the Google Call Scam Works
You receive a call from someone claiming to be from Google. They are supposedly updating or confirming your Google Places listing. You are asked to press “1” to stay on the line. If you do press “1,” you are told that your Google Places listing is not “confirmed” and will soon be removed from Google. The caller states “Our records show you have not updated your free Google (business) listing.” Oh no! Thank God Google was nice enough to call, right? You are then told that it will cost somewhere between $200 and $300 to confirm your Google Places listing.
DO NOT PROCEED!

- Google does not place unrequested phone calls.
- Google does not call to “update your Google Places listing”
- Google does not charge for inclusion in Google Search or Google Places.
If you receive a call like this, it is most undoubtedly not a Google employee. Hang up and don’t think twice.
