How Facebook Graph Search Affects Social Media Marketing
Facebook is one of the key social media marketing platforms. In 2014, if you’re not using Facebook, you’re not capitalizing on one of the best marketing strategies available. It allows you to connect with the 1.23 billion people who use Facebook every day. That aside, once you do start using Facebook, you need to get to know your tools. Facebook Graph Search has been pretty useless for marketing up until recently, since it only let you search for specific friends and companies. Facebook Graph Search has now expanded to include keyword search to help you find exactly what you’re looking for within Facebook. This includes:
- Old posts
- Friends
- Company pages
- Recent posts
What Does This Mean for Marketing?
Put simply, it means that it’s going to be a lot easier for people to find your posts! If, for instance, a year ago, you created a post about types of Christmas trees, someone could look up “Christmas trees” on Facebook Graph Search and come across your post.
There are some parameters to consider. Facebook uses a formula based on how close of a relationship a person has with a page or another person. For example, here at Adventure Web, we’re most likely to visit our clients’ pages. There may be hundreds of sites out there that are talking about Christmas trees, but if we use Facebook Graph Search and look up “Christmas trees,” we’re likely to come up with one of our clients’ sites about Christmas trees instead of finding the most recent Christmas tree related post. How recent something is has no bearing on Facebook Graph Search. This means that someone could stumble upon your post from two years ago, which could lead them straight to your website.
Okay, So How Can I Improve My Search Results?
- Keep it organic – Organic search has always been important for Google searches and SEO and now it’s going to be important on Facebook as well. Make sure that you post relevant topics and include keywords.
- Use keywords everywhere – Don’t over saturate your posts, but use them naturally in as many places as you can. Facebook will highlight the words that are searched in blue, and if that is your keyword, your post will appear highly relevant.
- Help your fans engage – This is important whether or not your fans are using organic search. The more engagement you get, the more likely your posts are to be seen.
