Pop-Up Penalties
Google is slowly moving towards a more mobile friendly internet, and in the next year, they’ll be cracking down on pop-up advertisements. In 2015, Google announced that the number of daily mobile searches officially surpassed the number of searches coming from desktops. According to SimilarWeb’s report last year, about 56 percent of web traffic to leading websites comes from mobile searches.
It isn’t uncommon for you to receive a pop up during your mobile web search. These marketing tools are disruptive, annoying, and often even degrade a website’s content. Because Google wants every consumer’s searching experience to be positive and uninterrupted, it will be attempting to penalize publishers who are responsible for negatively affecting a website with spam.
How to Avoid Them
Assess if your pop-up is acceptable. Some examples of acceptable pop-ups are age verification requests, cookie permission, or pieces of relevant news. Examine if the pop-ups on your site would be considered a nuisance to a mobile user. Think about the intention of your pop-up. Does it engage the user, or does it disrupt the user? An aggressive advertising campaign that relies on pop-ups that block content for a visitor is not going to promote your business or your web presence.
Google is becoming increasingly more serious about mobile web use, so it’s important that your website is optimized before 2017. Make sure all mobile text is readable without “pinch-zooming”. Keep your content easily scrollable, and optimize for local search.
Ch-Ch-Changes
Making the appropriate updates to your mobile site is crucial for maintaining an effective SEO. As the market continues to change and becomes more mobile-friendly, your approach to your business must change as well. When you do your best to evolve with Google’s restrictions, you’re doing your best for your business.
