3 Things in Social Media to Look out for in 2017
Social media is perhaps the fastest changing industry out there, and you can be sure to expect to see some big shifts in 2017. Here are a few trends in social media you might want to keep an eye out for in the new year.
Messaging Platforms
Messaging apps have a much larger community of users than your traditional social network. Did you know that WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber and WeChat together have more users than all of the big social networks? That includes Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Also noteworthy is the fact that 62% of millennials are more loyal to brands that engage view messaging channels, and by 2018 an estimated two billion users will be messaging through over-the-top messaging services rather than SMS.
Fake News
The internet is increasingly becoming the main news source for most people, especially young people. The rise of “fake news” has been a growing concern during the 2016 election. It will be worth seeing how social media giants like Facebook choose to tackle this issue, as it is a nontrivial problem to fix. Countries like Germany are already considering legislation that would find social media sites which continue to let fake news proliferate.
Live Video
Social media is taking it to the next level with live streaming video services such as Twitter’s Periscope and Facebook Live. Social videos have much more engagement than any other form of content, and they’re also responsible for a good deal of growth Facebook has been seeing. With Instagram now testing its own live video option, you can be sure to see more from this space for years to come. Millennials are the most active consumer of videos of any age group.
