Here’s an interesting article on some search-engine optimization (SEO) basics. We can skip over the first part, because by this point, most people know the value of SEO. The essentials that the article mentions, though are very helpful.
- Architecture – the Website should be well laid out and clear in its design.
- Back links – search engines like authorities and having links to a site establishes its authority.
- Content – quality content and keywords need to be found throughout the site, not just the titles, headers, and metadata.

Two weeks ago, the news broke that one the most popular social media marketing (SMM) tools – Delicious – was on the chopping block. Last week, Delicious’s owner, Yahoo, announced it was looking to sell, not shut down, Delicious. And you may be asking why you should care.
To answer the “why,” Delicious is an effective tool for search engine optimization (SEO) and SMM. Every time someone bookmarks a Webpage using Delicious, that Webpage improves its ranking in Google. So businesses that focus on SEO will want Delicious to continue.

Microsoft made some headlines recently with the news that it’s latest browser – Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) – will allow users to prevent some sites they designate from tracking their online behavior. Obviously, this move is a boon for consumers and a set back for advertisers. As this article points out, there’s a longer history to this IE9 feature.
Microsoft considered adding this feature to an earlier version of Internet Explorer. However, pressure from advertisers dissuaded them from doing so. Now with federal regulators criticizing the aggressive online tracking efforts by advertisers, Microsoft’s action points to a growing climate of anit-advertising sentiment. (more…)

All the hype over Google Instant has overshadowed Google’s efforts to take on Facebook with a social network of its own. Many have seen this coming through Google’s acquisitions recently. Now rumor has it that the network, Google Me, is coming this fall and far from being an alternative to Facebook, it will be a layer of social media features added to its existing products.
Why the change in direction? It may have something to do with Google’s social media failures over the last decade. In light of this history, building off of established products may be the wiser strategy. The company’s recent acquisitions seem to have centered on gaming, so it will be interesting to see what the end result will look like.

If your company’s blog is up and running and you’re regularly updating it with new posts, good job. You’re optimizing your site and moving up in search engine results. Now you’re ready for the next step: getting links to your blog posted on other sites. The more links there are to your site, the higher it will rise in search results. This article from Entireweb.com has a number of good suggestions for getting links to your blog.
- Pay for them. The quick and easy way to generate links is to find appropriate online directories for your industry and purchase a listing in them. If you’re unwilling or unable to spend this money, there are other options that are free but require more effort.
- Add video. Search engines like sites with video (and videos give you the opportunity to list your keywords again in the metadata), and there are online directories dedicated to sites with video. (Okay, you’ll have to pay for some of these too.)
- Participate in other blogs. If you find other blogs similar to yours, comment on the posts and include a link to your blog as part of your signature. First, you’ve created a link to your blog elsewhere. Second, you’ve opened the door for readers of the other blog to increase traffic to your site. Third, if readers see you as an authority, they’ll create their own links to your blog.
