How to choose a Web site designer

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Whenever you look up criteria for choosing a contractor, you see the same things over and over:  Find out how much experience they have, get references, and check their credentials.  When if comes to choosing a Web site designer, these are easy tasks.  A designer’s work and clients are out there on the Web for all to see.  So what else can you use to pick the right designer?  Here are some ideas.

  • Pay attention to features and content discussions.  If the designer talks more about site aesthetics and various Web bells and whistles than features that will drive more traffic to your site and help you make sales, you may wind up paying too much for a site that doesn’t function well for all.

Will you Wibiya?

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

A new social media application popping up on more and more websites is the Wibiya social toolbar. It resembles a true toolbar and resides at the bottom off website page.  It’s very customizable, so the toolbar will look different for every company, but you can expect to see the a company logo and the logos of other social media on it.

Alright, enough about what it looks like.  You want to know what it does.  Basically it links to your company’s social media and gives visitors a glimpse of these other pages without navigating away from your site.  So, if a visitor clicks the Facebook button on your Wibiya toolbar, a window opens displaying your company’s friends and fans and your Facebook wall.  Visitors can “Like” your page from the toolbar, read your Tweets, subscribe to your RSS feeds, and more.

Google’s instant improvement

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

As Google continues to maintain its status as top search engine against Microsoft’s Bing engine, it continues to innovate with new features.  First it added value by supplying search term suggestions as users typed.  Now, Google is taking the next step and is testing out delivering instant search results as users type.

As this Reuters article points out, Google is in such an early stage of testing instant search results that it’s not even confirming that the feature is in the works. Nevertheless, there’s sufficient evidence that testing is in progress and acknowledgment from experts that instant search results will further separate Google from the pack.  The feature requires so many resources on the back end that Google will have to strain to deliver it and its competitors will find it impossible to match it.

If your company’s blog is up and running and you’re regularly updating it with new posts, good job.  You’re optimizing your site and moving up in search engine results.  Now you’re ready for the next step:  getting links to your blog posted on other sites.  The more links there are to your site, the higher it will rise in search results. This article from Entireweb.com has a number of good suggestions for getting links to your blog.

  1. Pay for them.  The quick and easy way to generate links is to find appropriate online directories for your industry and purchase a listing in them.  If you’re unwilling or unable to spend this money, there are other options that are free but require more effort.
  2. Add video.  Search engines like sites with video (and videos give you the opportunity to list your keywords again in the metadata), and there are online directories dedicated to sites with video.  (Okay, you’ll have to pay for some of these too.)
  3. Participate in other blogs.  If you find other blogs similar to yours, comment on the posts and include a link to your blog as part of your signature.  First, you’ve created a link to your blog elsewhere.  Second, you’ve opened the door for readers of the other blog to increase traffic to your site.  Third, if readers see you as an authority, they’ll create their own links to your blog.

Google, Verizon tackle Internet regulation

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Last week, Google and Verizon issued a proposal for the public in general and lawmakers in particular to consider as they think about and discuss internet regulation.  As outlined in this RTTNews article, the proposal suggests ways of minimizing government intervention while promoting consumer protection, non-discrimination, transparency, and network management.

Google and Verizon envision a largely sefl-regulating arrangement among service providers which would maintain and possibly even advance the freedom and openness that makes the Internet so successful.  Service providers would not show favoritism toward any lawful applications or content providers, allowing consumers access to the content and services they wish.  Under the proposed arrangement, the FCC would step in only to adjudicate any customer protection and non-discrimination issues.

How important is SEO?

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Advertising Age has provided further arguments on the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) pointing out that it’s the most important way of building a company’s customer base.  There are many different components to an optimized site, and we wanted to pass on a few of them to give you an idea of what people mean when they talk about SEO.

Keyword Research & Development
SEO is all about getting your company’s Web site among the first few your potential customers will see when they search for the products and services you offer.  It’s more than just listing what you offer and encompasses all the different ways your customers find their way to you.

Location, location, location goes social

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

We’re not letting any cats out of the bag by proclaiming that location-based social networking is the next big thing. Talking heads have been falling all over each other to declare location-based services such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp, and Brightkite this year’s “Twitter.” However, it isn’t entirely clear how businesses can best utilize these networks. Despite this problem, there are things you can do to be ready when the corporate strategies come along.

It’s easy to see why location-based networks are so exciting. We already have targeted advertising in which consumers see ads that will likely interest them based on their social media profiles. We’ve also seen how social media has become the new “word of mouth” where companies’ reputations are made and unmade. Because networks like Foursquare report a person’s location, each check in is a tacit recommendation of the business to the person’s network. The next step in targeted advertising are ads for businesses that appear when a person is near that business.
